So let’s say you start having trouble with your internal drive, and want to troubleshoot it. Or maybe you want to use your portable macOS installation on another compatible Mac. To boot from your external Sierra drive, plug it into the Mac in question, press the power button, and hold the “Option key until the recovery disk screen appears. The easy part is downloading to the External Drive, you can even install programs tot he External Drive and run them from there without a problem other than running the risk of having the external. Yes - OS X doesn't care where you store apps for them to run. Similarly, most programs don't force you to store all documents in one place. You shouldn't expect to seamlessly have everything move from the internal storage to the external storage, but caring older files and larger files on a sometimes disconnected drive is a long held idiom for working with computers.

I have an iMac with SSD and traditional hard drive. Now the SSD are getting full and I want to move stuff to the traditional hard drive since this i much larger. I have already moved iTunes library.
How can I move applications from the SSD drive to the traditional hard drive ? Eg. I have a photoshop application of about 2,5 gb which would be nice to have on the traditional drive rather than SSD since I don´t use it much. Should I be careful when moving applications or is it safe ? Thanks a lot for any input. —– Nigel Datta
